Easy Protein Shakes for Vegans

When it comes to taking our protein supplements, there are many different approaches. Some people like to just throw some water on top of their protein powder and chug it down following a hard workout. Some enjoy it with a rich plant based milk and maybe some chia seeds or flax sprinkled on top. Others still like to take their time, break out the blender, and make a magical protein concoction. IF the last approach sounds familiar than this blog is for you. The following recipes and tips are for people who want a more rounded protein shake, ideal for folks with a little bit more time and availability of ingredients. They’re also all super easy to make!

*Thanks to the diversity of ingredients and nutrients, these also make excellent meal replacement shakes!

Green Power Smoothie

This smoothie is one of my favorite drinks for right after a long, tough workout. Or as a light, nutrient packed breakfast to start my day. All you’ll need is your blender, and the following Ingredients:

-       1 cup plant based milk

-       1 ripe banana

-       ½ cup frozen mango chunks

-       1 scoop vanilla vegan protein powder

-       2 ½ tbsp. hemp hearts

-       2 handfuls baby spinach

Blend the ingredients together and enjoy!

Pro tip: Freeze a couple bananas so you can use them to thicken your smoothie without having to dilute it with ice!

Pineapple Blueberry Recovery Smoothie

Harness the anti-inflammatory power of Pineapples (thanks Bromelain!), and the antioxidant properties of blueberries, to make this magical post-exercise vegan recovery smoothie! You’ll need a blender, and the following ingredients:

-       1 cup plant based milk

-       2 bananas (frozen or fresh)

-       1 cup of frozen blueberries

-       ½ - 1 cup vegan protein powder

-       ½ cup chopped fresh pineapple

Spirulina Boosted Protein Shake

If you’ve never tried Spirulina, now is a great time to start. Spirulina is a vegan superfood consisting of blue green algae, and just a small amount can go a long way! Spirulina is known to be a great detoxifying agent, and is absolutely PACKED with nutrients. It contains a wonderful blend of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and proteins. Spirulina also has a wonderful B-vitamin complex, manganese, zinc, beta carotene, vitamin E and a lot more… Most health stores or natural grocers should have a spirulina on their shelves. So, go get yourself some Spirulina if you haven’t already, pull out your blender, and get together the following ingredients:

-       1 cup plant based milk

-       1 banana (frozen or fresh)

-       1 handful of dark leafy green (kale is my favorite)

-       ½ cup fresh pineapple

-       1 scoop vanilla flavored vegan protein powder

-       ½ tsp spirulina

Blend them all together and enjoy! You can add more or less spirulina according to your taste.
